Chairman's address 2019

   24 Jun 2019

Dear Friends,

Our show here in Bonniconlon is celebrating it’s 70th year, what a fantastic start to the year, winning the “Ireland’s best country show” title. This event was hosted by the Irish Sport Horse Industry Awards which took place in The K Club, Co. Kildare.

Our show is designed as a platform to present all aspects of Irish culture and agriculture for town and country alike. Our show is now rated as one of the best events in the country with entertainment for young and old. This event would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors for their outstanding support over the years and who still support us in what every way possible even in these hard times. To them we say “Go raibh mile maith agaibh”

It is, without question the continuous commitment and tireless efforts of the exhibitors and competitors who have supported us over the years. Thank you to Superintend Joe Doherty and staff of Ballina Garda Station & our local Garda Aidrian Kierans. Our judges, Civil Defence, I.C.A., Rally Marshalls, Foroige, Rathkip Residents Association, G.A.A. Tidy Towns, Mayo County Council, our hard working Secretary, Gerry and his helpers. A special work of thanks to our land owners and anyone inconvenienced because of our show. And last but not least our hard working stewards from far and near who work tirelessly for weeks before and after the show to make it the successful event it is. A big ”Thank You” to all. To our vet on call for the day Fintan O’Donnell, to our local Solas team, Rural Social Scheme and Tus and their supervisors Paschal Tuohy, Gerry Murphy and Elizabeth Fair.

We are delighted to host the All Ireland Super Suckler Cow and Calf Championship with a prize fund of €3500. This competition will be judged as a loose pening competition. I would like to thank the Irish Charolais Cattle Society for hosting and collecting the sponsorship for this competition.

We are delighted to host the All Ireland Junior Home Cook final at our show, finalists from each province will participate along with a qualifier which was chosen from the ploughing championships in 2018.

Mayo Enterprise Board is inviting food companies to display their products in the Marquee again this year.

On behalf of the committee I would like to extend sincere sympathy to all families who have lost loved ones in the past year. I would like to remind people that safety is something that we have to be very aware of. I appeal to you all, be it spectators or exhibitors to acknowledge the directions of our safety officers and stewards, notices and public announcements.

On behalf of all involved we wish you an enjoyable day at our show and a safe journey home. Hope the sun will shine.

John O’Hara
